HBA Spotting: July – August 2022

This will be my new style of spotting posts, where I just do one post covering a few months of spotting action at YMHB. Having done a seperate post for a spotting session earlier in July, this blog will cover one session from late July, and one from last weekend!

The main purpose of this first session in July was to see the second ever Virgin Australia Regional flight from Perth. Virgin Australia announced in June that from July 29th to late October the Hobart-Perth route will be taken over by VARA, operated on an A320. This led to a new photo opportunity as although the livery is identical, you won’t see the Virgin skin on a non-VARA A320, which are rarely seen outside of WA.

One of Jetstar’s many A320s VH-XNW came in from Sydney

An equally normal sight – a Qantas 737 (VH-VXF) made a smooth take-off

The last and most interesting spot was this unidentifiable Bombardier 604. Due to the poor lighting I couldn’t get the registration of it from this photo, and I messed up the autofocus meaning I didn’t get any other photos of it. Information regarding private jets is very scarce online so if anyone knows the reg of this plane that info would be much appreciated!

Following that, my next spotting session was in late August. This was a very exciting session as it marked my first time plane spotting with a new 300mm lens, which should be noticeable in some of the photos below and hopefully will improve my photo quality from now on.

First up was Air New Zealand’s A321neo ZK-NNC, having just operated flight NZ198 from Auckland.

After that was Virgin Australia’s VH-YFF pushing back and heading off to Melbourne, picture two here probably being my favourite picture I’ve ever taken at Hobart!

From a bit lower down on Tower Hill, I managed to get this picture of one of Sharp Airlines dinky little Metroliners, though missed the registration of it

Rotorlift’s 4 seat Bell 206 VH-UHV, then came in over the airport to land at the Heliport.

Finally, I went round to near the Qantas Freight terminal to get these snaps of Boeing 737-300F VH-XMR, big thanks to YMHB Spotting for telling me about this location!

I hope you enjoyed this new format of plane spotting blog. You can expect another in a few months. In terms of other blogs, I still have a few long-term projects on the back-burner but I have no idea when they’ll be up. You can also expect some trip reports after my family’s October trip to New Zealand. In terms of other platforms I aim to post relatively frequently on Instagram, and although there’s not much to put on my Youtube channel I may have some more footage after the New Zealand trip.
